The system is under about 12 years old, the failure is a single component (capacitor, contactor, fan motor, board, thermostat, drain), the refrigerant circuit is intact, and the rest of the unit tests clean. That is a repair, and it should not turn into a sales conversation.
Worth a real conversation
The system is 15 years or older, the compressor or coil has failed, there is a refrigerant leak in a hard-to-reach section, or it runs the older R-22 refrigerant. When the repair starts approaching a meaningful fraction of a new system, you deserve both numbers side by side.
